How much power bank do you need?

Pick a power bank by how long you need to stay away from an outlet. The number on the box, in milliamp-hours (mAh), is the battery inside the pack. Your phone receives less than that, because some energy is lost as heat while it charges, so treat the mAh as a ceiling, not a promise.

For a commute or a night out, 5000mAh is enough for a top-up. The MagSafe Slim Power Bank snaps to the back of a MagSafe iPhone and also charges over its PD20W USB-C port. Two 5000mAh packs double as hand warmers: the Rechargeable Hand Warmer and Power Bank heats on both sides at about 113ยฐF or 131ยฐF and charges a phone from its USB port, and the Hand Warmer Power Bank has adjustable warmth.

For a full day, 10000 to 12000mAh is the everyday size. The MagSafe 3-in-1 charges a phone, a watch and earbuds from one 10000mAh pack. The 10400mAh Qi pack charges any Qi phone laid on top and a second device by USB-C at the same time. The 12000mAh Power Bank has two USB outputs at 3.1A and a battery level display.

For travel days and weekends, 20000mAh and up. The 20000mAh Ultra-Thin charges two devices at once from an aluminum shell about 1 cm thick, and it is about 74Wh, so it still flies in a carry-on with no airline approval. The 30000mAh Fast-Charging Power Bank comes in 10000, 20000 and 30000mAh options; the 30000mAh one is about 111Wh, which needs airline approval, so it suits road trips, camping and power outages. Away from outlets for longer, the Solar Power Bank recharges in the sun and adds an LED flashlight.

Driving instead? The 30W 3-Port Car Charger runs three cables from the car socket, and the Magnetic Wireless Car Charger holds a Qi phone on the vent or dash while it charges. Compare power banks by capacity

Sorted from smallest to largest. Watt-hours (Wh) are worked out from the listed mAh with Wh = mAh / 1000 x 3.7, the number airlines go by; the rating printed on the casing is what security checks. Every other detail comes from the product listing; a dash means the listing does not state it.

Questions before you buy

How many times will a power bank charge my phone?

Divide the pack by your phone battery and expect a bit less, since some energy is lost as heat. As a rough guide, a 5000mAh pack adds about half to one full charge to a typical phone, a 10000mAh pack about one and a half to two, and a 20000mAh pack about three. A tablet or a big phone gets fewer.

Which power banks charge two devices at once?

The 12000mAh pack has two USB outputs, the 20000mAh Ultra-Thin has dual outputs, the 30000mAh pack has multiple ports, and the Solar Power Bank has dual USB outputs. The 10400mAh Qi pack charges one phone on its wireless pad and a second device by USB-C at the same time, and the MagSafe 3-in-1 charges a phone, a watch and earbuds.

Can I fly with these power banks?

In your carry-on only, never in a checked bag. Every pack here is under 100Wh except the 30000mAh option of the 30000mAh Fast-Charging Power Bank, which works out to about 111Wh and needs your airline's approval first. Airlines can set stricter limits, including how many power banks you carry, so check with yours before you fly.

Do the MagSafe packs work with Android?

The magnets need a MagSafe iPhone, a magnetic case or a magnetic ring, and wireless charging needs a phone that supports Qi. Any phone with a USB-C port can still charge from their PD20W USB-C port with a cable. For an Android phone with Qi, the 10400mAh pack charges it on its wireless pad with no magnets needed.
